December 10, 1872 - December 20, 1944
Valentine Herman, the son of John Herman and
Caroline Foemmel, was born in the town of Mosel, WI on December 10,
1872. He attended public school in Mosel, and took courses at the Sheboygan
Business College. He married Helena Mahnke on
January 28, 1897, and the couple spent their entire lives in Sheboygan County.
Valentine worked at various dairies in Sheboygan, and after gaining wide
experience he established his own business in 1897. Under his supervision, the
Val Herman Milk Depot, formerly located on South 9th Street, became one of the
city's most flourishing businesses.
Some time later, Valentine joined forces with two of his brothers,
Henry and Louis, to form the Herman
Brothers Dairy Depot. Their brother Conrad also
later became involved in this venture. The business thrived until in 1929
increased process costs forced them to sell the business to Sheboygan Verifine
Dairy Products Company. Valentine continued to serve as superintendent for a
number of years prior to his resignation. He was also associated at one time
with the Fountain City Dairy in Fond du Lac.
In his retirement, which was motivated by heart problems, Valentine devoted his
time to his home and garden. He is reported to have had a good sense of humor
and a cheerful disposition, and was a well-respected citizen of Sheboygan.
Valentine died of a heart attack on December 20, 1944, less than two weeks
after his 72nd birthday. He died at his home at 302 Ontario Avenue in
Sheboygan. Burial was in the family lot at Wildwood Cemetery.
